Fly Fishing Travel on DVD: Looking Back at The Trout Bum Diaries Vol. 1

The Trout Bum Diaries Vol. 1 was a game changer. It’s title was an uncontested claim of what is displayed throughout the film: hard-core trout bumming. And TBD1 was rich with anglers sleeping on dirt and trekking through difficult terrain in pursuit of wild Patagonian fish.

The film followed the angling exploits of Mikey Wier, Chris Owens, Ryan Davey, and others throughout Patagonia. The film documented the catching of gorgeous wild fish on the fly but also the all-out commitment these anglers have for fly fishing. The result: a trend in mass fly fishing film making following TBD1 and copy-cat anglers who sought to prove similar commitments to fly fishing. For the rest of us, it normalized our obsession with fly fishing and fanned the fire.
