“Looking Through Water” — A Multigenerational Drama of Healing, Redemption, and Fly Fishing Hits Theaters on September 12th

From oakpool:

[Los Angeles, California] – Looking Through Water, an emotionally resonant new drama directed by Roberto Sneider and featuring Academy Award–winner Michael Douglas alongside his real-life son Cameron Douglas, sails into theaters across North America this September 12, 2025. The film unfolds as both a quiet redemption tale and a moving exploration of family bonds across generations as weaved together by the art of fly fishing.

About the Story

William McKay (Michael Stahl-David) is a high-powered New York executive whose world is upended by a public betrayal. When his estranged father, Leo (David Morse), invites him to participate in a father-son fly fishing tournament in San Pedro, Belize, William reluctantly agrees—draped in a tuxedo and a fog of whiskey. Amid sun-lit waters, awkward casts, and sharp words, father and son begin to navigate not only the tranquil waters of Belize but also the turbulent depths of their past.

Later, William, now older (played by Michael Douglas), recounts that transformative week to his grandson Kyle (Walker Scobell) during a fishing trip of their own—an intimate bridge between pain and understanding, time, family, and redemption.

Adaptation and Direction

Based on the evocative novel Looking Through Water by Bob Rich, with screenplay by Zach Dean and Rowdy Herrington, the film delves into themes of forgiveness, reconnection, and the healing forces of nature. “To see the characters from my book now having their adventure on the screen has been a real treat,” says Rich.
