Gear Review: The Mammut Selun FL Sun Hoody

For nearly a year, we’ve enjoyed checking out the Mammut Selun FL Sun Hoody — a mighty-fine piece of technical apparel that is now a go-to baselayer throughout the year.

An approach of assuming maybe three or so apparel companies within the fly fishing space offer the best of what’s around is certainly a way to exclude some of the best gear out there. That’s why we’ve recently looked further to find the absolute best in technical apparel — specifically with baselayers.

Of course, Mammut needs no introduction — they’ve been a top outdoor apparel and gear brand for many, many years. But for fly anglers not participating in other sports such as skiing or climbing, Mammut might need to be considered for the first time, and the Selun FL Sun Hoody is a great place to start.

For anglers in the Western U.S., a layering system is vital. Unlike much of the rest of the country, western mountain states often offer dramatic changes in the weather over the course of any day. A 40-degree temperature change in a day is not uncommon. That said, a bundled up morning can be a light shirt and shorts afternoon.

Over recent years, hooded sun hoodies have become a staple for anglers. These long-sleeve, hooded shirts are as appropriate as any other light baselayer that can then be added on to with fleece, wool, and other heavier pieces. But unlike the heavier pieces, the same sun hoody might be ideal for use in intense summer heat or even a day on the flats. And what is especially nice is having options. I like hoods. Sometimes the hood on a heavy Gore jacket is too much. If I’m hiking through the snow to get to the river, the hood from the sun shirt might be best.

Like anything else, not all sun hoodies are the same. We’ve tested some over the years that are so bad, they don’t even get a write-up. But as you might expect, the Mammut Selun FL Sun Hoody is an impressive and superior piece of apparel.

This hoody is designed to handle the heat and sun. Mammut states that this shirt offers UPF 50+ sun protection as well as an anti-odor treatment. Thumb loops at the wrists help extend the reach of the sleeve for a little more coverage, and the fabric is intended to wick moisture (and sweat) for improved comfort. There is also extra material in the front of the neck that can be pulled up to be sure to cover your lower face.

Beyond these technical features, the Mammut Selun FL Sun Hoody is impressively comfortable. Designed for an athletic fit, this hoody is snug throughout the torso and arms. If you don’t like a snug fit, consider going up a size. But for me, sticking with my size did feel off at first (because so many sun hoodies are loose fitting), but after no time, I found the fit ideal. The stretchy material soon made the shirt — especially in the arms — fit perfectly … like a glove, so to speak. An additional aspect to the fit that was very well-received was how snug the hood felt. There are so many sun hoodies that can’t keep the hood over the head if there is any sort of breeze. The Mammut design is great for people who are actually outside.

The Mammut Selun FL Sun Hoody is currently available in Black, Silver Sage, and Glacier Blue and in sizes S through XXL. This hoody is going everywhere with me — from distant flats to cold days in the Rockies. Highly recommended.
