Patagonia has taken a bold move in response to Utah Governor Gary Herbert’s decision to rescind the Bears Ears National Monument. Politicians in Utah have been making many decisions that reject the needs of ecosystems as well as access to state lands and rivers. The Venturing Angler applauds Patagonia on this move.

Gary Herbert signed a resolution on Friday urging the Trump administration to rescind the Bears Ears National Monument, making it clear that he and other Utah elected officials do not support public lands conservation nor do they value the economic benefits – $12 billion in consumer spending and 122,000 jobs – that the outdoor recreation industry brings to their state. have begun a mad dash to destroy our environment, public lands, education,
healthcare, SS, MEDICAID, MEDICAIRE,
SNAP, VA , since the election of trump..
and giving back..to their donors, Wall Street. and Russia…not to mention
Big Oil..
They can’t wait to poison the planet..and for What, Exactly ???
Out of spite.?. or rascism…? or because Obamas’ Name is attached to the legislation????…
Their children …and grandchildren will be sharing the same poisoned Air and Water..

I like that they’re against such decisions. However taking their business away from the state only strengthens the stature of the elected officials on this decision. If patagonia and various other retailers follow suite, then Utah will lose a substantial amount of outdoor recreation revenue leading to more public land closures. Perhaps boycotting isn’t always the best response but rather fighting with facts and data. Perhaps if they strengthen their revenue and investments in such states, then positive change will follow. These large companies are the shield of such public lands and leaving may expose such lands to further neglect.
It is not very forward thinking for the state of Utah to take such a backward thinking action when so much of the states economy is based on tourism.
I sincerely thank Patagonia for taking this step. This ” business-friendly” administration is actually encouraging rapacious greed that disregards long term benefit to all Americans in favor of immediate gains to big-businesses that exploit our natural resources. How about you, REI? Northface?
