Review: Mojo Super Tec Technical Fishing Shorts

Mojo Super-Tec Fishing Shorts

At ICAST/IFTD in Orlando in July, the Mojo Sportswear Company booth peaked my interest. On the verge taking on several days in the salt and already feeling the impact of the taxing southeast summer heat, their booth looked like an oasis. Admittedly, as a fly angler, I’ve mostly stuck with technical apparel from “fly side” companies. Mojo was not as much on my radar. Now they are.

I recently spent some time with the Mojo Super Tec Technical Fishing Shorts and was impressed with the design and function. First, the Super Tec shorts feature a 100% Rip Stop Supplex® Nylon Fabric – a material that proved to quickly dry and handle water well. I watched water bead off the shorts when spilling over top of them, and when fully submerged, the shorts did not feel like an anchor that suddenly took on a different fit.

When it comes to fit, these shorts were perfect. The first test was the squat test to make certain I had full range of motion while maintaining comfort. Success. The loose fit of the design allows an angler to take on every possible task on the water without worrying about the shorts being restrictive or tight with certain motions. The waist was a nice, snug, firm-fit with button-elastic on the sides to secure the desired fit when wet. With the elastic on the sides, there was no need to worry about zipping up the drawstring – an issue with other shorts.

As a saltwater fly fisherman, I was also pleased with the pocket set up. In addition to two Velcro back pockets, the cargo style of the shorts means that I have plenty of pocket space for everything I would want close to me. A concern I have with cargo shorts as a fly angler is getting line caught on the bulky side pockets. Remember, you sometimes get one shot all day, and if the line you are shooting gets caught on something, it’s over! With these shorts, the side pockets featured a low-profile that had plenty of room inside but also wouldn’t get in the way at those critical moments.

Finally, one of the smartest features on the shorts is the Denier lined tool pockets that rest just above the cargo side pockets. One could easily keep pliers, hemostats, or other tools in these pockets without damaging the shorts, and the slimmer sized pockets mean that items like pliers and hemos stay vertically positioned.

From walking beaches to wet-wading to standing perched on the bow, the Mojo Super Tec Technical Fishing Shorts are intelligently designed shorts that truly serve the needs of anglers. A great bet!
