Bob Day of En La Mosca Adventures guides out of San Diego, California for the wide range of saltwater species found in San Diego Bay. Day recently sat down to take on some questions for the Venturing Angler:
1. Why do you guide where you do?
I guide primarily in the back part of San Diego Bay because there are many places to fish, the waters are calm, the crowds are light and I can be sure everyone will catch some fish.
2. What is your favorite fish specie?
My favorite species in San Diego Bay is the Pacific bonefish. Once you find them and catch one you will always want to catch more. The primary catch is the spotted bay bass and pound for pound they are the scrappiest fish in the bay.
3. What is your favorite thing about guiding?
My favorite thing about guiding is the people I meet and the kids I teach how to fish. I was once asked if there was anyone I would not want back as a client. I can honestly say, every client I have had has been great and fun to fish with. The kids are the best.
4. What is the most memorable trip you’ve guided and why?
The most memorable trip was a father and his two sons, 5 and 7. The kids were smart, friendly, polite and great little fishermen. They had a policy that everytime they fished together they would fill out a plaque with the person the first fish, the most fish and the biggest fish. It was a great family competition that was a joy to watch.
5. What is the funniest thing you’ve experienced while guiding?
I took a woman and her boy friend fishing and she wanted to learn how to fly fish. The first fish she got on the fly was one I casted and hooked for her so she could bring it in. the second fish was one she casted for, set the hook and landed. I thought she was going to fall out of the boat she was so happy.
6. What is your favorite thing about guiding?
See #3
7. If you had only one day off all year, where would you fish and fish would you target?
I would go to Key West Florida and target bonefish
8. What are your favorite three flies?
Clouser minnow in black with green flash for early in the morning. Clouser minnow in olive and white with green flash. Clouser minnow in orange and white with silver flash. All on size 4 hooks.
9. What is the one piece of gear you couldn’t bear to leave at home?
6 weight Orvis Helios 2 fly rod and reel
10. Do you have any other passions?
Fine woodworking and living in a big boat on the water
