Tom Lovette of Globetrouters Guide Service is a Methow River based fly fishing guide in Washington. Lovette recently sat down to take on some questions for the Venturing Angler:
1. Why do you guide where you do?
I guide the Methow River because I’ve lived here almost my entire life and grew up learning how to master the art of fly fishing. After I left for a few years and fished many other great waters, I found that my home stream is unique and that what I might be missing in my life is my home town river.
2. What is your favorite fish species?
I’ve mostly fished freshwater in my life but I love to fish for trout and steelhead and find that every single day I learn something new – not only about the fish and the stream but about myself.
3. What is your favorite thing about guiding?
I’ve guided a lot of experienced anglers in my guiding career and I’ve had a lot of fun, but what I like most about guiding is when kids or novice anglers catch fish, and I get to see that look on their face that I remember having as a young angler. Being able to give new anglers and kids that feeling is why I guide.
4. What is the most memorable trip you’ve guided and why?
The memorable trip I’ve been on was kind of a guide/training day we had with a new guide applying with us. He was new from A to Z and had just begun fly fishing. At one point we let him row the raft and was teaching him a few things, and while he was rowing he thought that a rod was falling out of the raft and as he reached for the rod (which hadn’t moved) he fell out of the boat. I think he was a little nervous.
5. What is the funniest thing you’ve experienced while guiding?
I once watched a guy land a steelhead and fall face first in the water trying to release it. Then once he got it released he turned around stood up and tripped face first in the water. That was the end of our day.
6. What makes your guide service great?
My guide service is great because we are truly passionate about giving our clients the best experience possible. We are young, locally raised fly fisherman that work good together to offer a great service to our visitors so they can love our great home as much as we do.
7. If you had only one day off all year, where would you fish and what fish would you target?
Mongolia for Taimen.
8. What are your favorite three flies?
Chubbie Cherynoble, Peacock Stonefly, and an orange rubber legged stimulator. I’ve caught all my trophy trout and steelhead on these patterns.
9. What is the one piece of gear you couldn’t bear to leave at home?
My VestPac.
10. Do you have any other passions?
I am an avid Duck Hunter and love it almost just as much as fly fishing. I hunt Mallards and geese on the Columbia all season long. I also love business and study it as much as I can.
