More on this fly fishing destination:

Baja California is a Mexican state of great interest to fly anglers. The westernmost region of Mexico, Baja faces the Pacific Ocean on the west and welcomes the Sea of Cortez on the east-side of the peninsula.

Many anglers regard Baja as an extension of California, as its geographical features mirror neighboring Southern California. Some also state that Baja is what California must have been like over one hundred years ago. Also like California, Baja has world-class surfing and fly fishing, and for fly anglers, Baja is saltwater fly fishing paradise.

Without having to travel far off the sand, many of the most exotic bluewater species, from tuna to dorado, can be found in these warm waters, and the Sea of Cortez has gained fame in recent years for the pursuit of roosterfish from area beaches.

For a saltwater trip, Baja is relatively inexpensive. Flights, food, and lodging is generally cheaper than many other destinations, and guide fees are often cheaper than other international saltwater spots. Many regard late spring and summer to be the best times to fly fish this area. While it’s warmer this time of year, fishing is just as hot, and the winds of earlier months have died down.
